Rugged Steel Toed Work Boots

by admin

You need tough rugged protective footwear on the job. The question is: do you need composite toe or  steel toed work boots?

First, check with your workplace. Are  caps required? They might be if you work in construction or manufacturing – and, if that’s the case, then your decision is easy to make!

If steel caps are not required, but you want the ultimate in protection to prevent injuries from workplace hazards and accidents, then consider choosing  caps in your footwear. If you have a career in sales or as an inspector that takes you into workplaces that require added protection in footwear, it can make sense to choose  caps.

Disadvantages of  men’s steel toed work boots

Footwear with  caps can be heavy, which can make them less comfortable to wear. They also will not pass through metal detectors, which may be a problem if you visit federal buildings and the like that have detectors at the doors.

If the heaviness of the footwear is your main concern, determine if  work shoes would fit your needs. They provide protection with less overall weight.

If you need rugged protection in your footwear, but don’t need  steel toed work boots, consider choosing composite toe steel toed work boots.

Composite toe caps provide protection against workplace accidents and hazards without the weight of steel, plus they pass freely through metal detectors. The protective toe caps are made from materials such as Kevlar, plastic, fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Footwear with composite toes (as well as with steel caps) often have other key features that you need, including being waterproof, insulated, oil resistant, heat resistant, static dissipative and much more. Make sure that the pair that you select has all the features that you need and want.

Whether you choose  steel toed work boots or composite toe steel toed work boots, there are two important things to keep in mind:

1) It’s important that the footwear you buy meets all of the necessary ASTM standards.

The ASTM certification should be clearly labeled on your steel toed work boots, either stitched or stamped on. In the United States, relevant standards are these: ASTM Standards F 2412-05 and ASTM Standards 2413-05.

2) Ensure that the men’s steel toed work boots or shoes fit your feet well.

First, check to see if the protective cap fits well. If not, there are numerous other styles and shapes of caps and you need to choose the one that best fits your feet.

You can get terrific deals online, but make sure that they sell top quality brands and offer you a toll-free number and other ways to contact them for questions.

Orthotic Soled Steel Toed Work Boots

by admin

Orthotic steel toed work boots are designed to provide extreme support, firmness and prevent any abnormality to the feet or ankles. The ready-made steel toed work boots with generic insoles provide full comfort especially at a workplace. They improve foot performance and can be used by everyone, not just orthotic patients. They are ideal for people whose job involves long hours of standing or moving around.

These steel toed work boots are made using caps or durable outsoles for different work conditions. The orthotic insert also acts as a shock absorber and thereby reduces the stress. Custom-made steel toed work boots, on the other hand, are meant for patients with major injuries or foot problems.

Orthotic Insole Types

SuperFlex – These flexible orthotic inserts provide biomechanical support for all types of activities. They can be easily inserted into all shoe types or safety steel toed work boots.

SportsFlex – These insoles offer full protection from injury and also reduce fatigue. They come in full and 3/4 length sizes. This insole is ideal for use in steel toed work boots for work.

CushionFlex – These are suitable for people with diabetic and arthritic problems. They give extra cushioning to the feet and are comfortable to wear. These insoles also give support and stability to the feet when standing for long periods.

SafetyFlex – These insoles are engineered to provide comfort and support for people who stand all through the workday. They can be easily placed in work or safety steel toed work boots.

Benefits of Orthotic steel toed work boots

The benefits of using orthotic steel toed work boots are numerous. Here are some of the major benefits:

1. Full protection from work related injuries: The use of such steel toed work boots safeguards the feet and ankles from all types of injuries in a work area. The soles are designed using a special type of thick material that is slip resistant and not conductive of electricity. It is considered better to use lightweight rather than heavyweight steel toed work boots in a work place.

2. Great support for both ankles and feet: These steel toed work boots provide firm balance to the foot and ankle during rigorous activities. It is, however, necessary that the insoles properly fit the feet since foot and ankle stress tend to increase as the workday advances.

3. Proper alignment of the spinal chord and pelvis: The right boot enhances the functioning of the joints, pelvis, and spine. It is believed that abnormal biomechanical support leads to chronic back injuries.

4. Moisture control: These steel toed work boots also control moisture very efficiently and thus prevent foot odor or fungal foot infections. You should consider factors like comfort, support, shock absorption and durability before making the final choice when selecting orthotic steel toed work boots.

Selecting a pair of Steel-Toed boots for your Occupation

by admin

Many companies produce reports and articles of why their steel toe shoes are perfect, so I will give an unbiased opinion of how to select a pair of quality steel toe shoes.

You should consider the following 5 factors when buying steel toe shoes: Fabric, Durability, Sole, Flexibility, and Additional Features. I will go into more detail on each of these categories below.

Fabric: Different fabrics can make or break a shoe in a matter of months. It can also make you feel uncomfortable if it is not the right fabric. There are gortex like rubber, canvas like fabrics, suede, and leather. Leather has one of the best aspects for steel toe safety aspects in my opinion. They are easily broken in after a few days and then they fit your foot like a glove. Leather will not burn and ignite into flames or melt. If they are burnt or scuffed they can be easily polished and masked away. Thick leather is ideal and looks nice.

Durability: Is the shoe made to last a long time or is it just made to OSHA standards with a shelf life of only six months? What I mean by durability, is whether the shoe will last for two years of wear and tear before you have to replace them. Some shoes may look nice and can take a beating but after a few months the stitches come apart, the metal wears through the padding and digs into your foot, there are many things which can occur if the shoe is not engineered just right. Does the shoe have a steel shank? Is the steel toe area padded well and with lasting material? Will the shoe backing hold? And the sole, how long will that last?

Sole: This is very important and is more of a sub category of Durability, but merits its own category. First, there are two types of soles, those made to last a year or more and those that are not. I have seen shoes with holes showing in the sole after only a few weeks as the rubber begins to wear away and the hollow honey comb style sole bears forth. Literally dig your finger into the sole in various areas, if it bends easily and you can feel the air, it wont last very long. Although tougher rubber or thicker may not be as comfortable, it will last. One problem with worn soles is that they have a tendency to wear on one side only based on your walking habits. After a while it is dangerous to walk in shoes that are half worn, it can throw your back out, cramps, and more. One more health issue to avoid caused by cheap products.

Flexibility: Will the product bend. If the sole is so thick it barely moves, how well will the contours of your foot feel after an 8 hour day? Some shoes are so heavily reinforced with different materials that the backs never mold to your foot or the steel toe area just continues to dig into your toes? What ever it may be, bend the shoe, try it on. If you feel too much discomfort in a certain area, take the shoe off and inspect it, you might just find that this shoe just wont work for you. This is another key point, some shoes just don’t work for everyone.

Features: Are the shoes rated Electrical Hazard, Insulated, Waterproof, etc. There are many things to look at and it will depend on your job.

Reasons behind owning a pair of Steel-Toed Boots

by admin

OSHA demands that workers on certain types of job sites wear steel toe boots. This means you not only have to have them to work on the job. You even have to wear them if you are on the site as a visitor, inspector, or salesman. If you are around construction sites or other job sites where heavy equipment is used, you will need a good pair of steel toe boots. They will cover all your footwear needs on the job.

Steel toe boots are better for your feet in many ways, and that is why they are required by OSHA and others. You will be glad to know that steel toe boots are more durable than ordinary shoes. You can spend the money on your special boots knowing that they will keep your feet in working condition for a long time to come. You might get an athletic shoe that would last a long time being used for sports, but it will not be made for the punishment a construction job site dishes out. Steel toe boots can also offer ankle support that you cannot get from other shoes or boots.

The main reason steel toe boots are so often required is the protection they offer. They can keep equipment and falling objects from landing with full force on your toes. Without steel toe boots, you might suffer damage or even the loss of your toes. Never underestimate the importance of healthy feet to your ability to work. If your toes are damaged beyond repair, you might not be able to walk well, if at all. Your feet are the foundation your body stands on. Taking care of them only makes sense.

To take care of your feet properly, you will need a very good pair of steel toe boots. Boots that are made of thin leather will not hold up. Besides that, the steel toe will not be seated securely into position. The leather, instead, should be sturdy enough to last and to maintain its form. If it is strong enough leather, it will not only fulfill the basic functions of steel toe boots. It will also keep you from getting damage to the skin of your feet, such as cuts. If the ankle is high, it will keep you from twisting your ankles as you move around the job site, climb ladders, and step down into excavated areas.

The steel toe is of utmost importance in choosing steel toe boots. There are several things to look for. You should first try squeezing the steel toe from the top to the bottom of the toe. If it flexes, it will not give your toe much protection. Also, notice how far back the steel toe goes. One type of steel toe boots covers just the tips of the toes while another goes back about 2 1/2 inches. The longer steel toe is stronger and will protect a larger area of your foot. Another thing to look for is steel toes that do not wrap around the entire toe area, but simply cup the toe. They are not strong steel toe boots. Find the best steel toe boots, and wear them. They will serve you well and long.

Can a date get worse than this?

by admin

So, I recently relocated to a new state. I haven’t really met anyone aside from my co-workers. That is, until a guy came into my place of work and smoothly took my number on his second visit. He asked me on a date, I thought – why not? I haven’t dated since February so I was nervous. But here is how my date went.

He picked me up with his dog in the car. He over talked, didn’t care to learn a thing about me and wouldn’t shut up about his exes. We stopped at his house to let the dog out so we could go to lunch. He lives in a trailer with his grandparents who are major hoarders. It was disgusting. I looked past it and we went to lunch to a place my family and I frequent and it was good. Well, the food was. He again over talked and went on and on about exes. He also took the opportunity to tell me the following:

- he has a 3 year old child.
- he is engaged. (not to the babies mother)
- he can’t hold a job.
- he didn’t finish high school.
- he has crazy exes and a ton of ex drama. (other than the fiance and the baby momma!)
- he wants to make me like his ex and teach me to barrel race. (horses are the only common interest we share, although I do NOT barrel race)
- he wants to start a business with me on the farm I manage and buy/sell/train horses.

He told me all this and a little more at lunch. Oh and he also smokes, drinks and chews tobacco. All qualities I am not interested in. I had previously mentioned this to him and the fact that I am a virgin and will not be sleeping with him. He thought I was joking and thought he would make it clear that I should not feel like that three months from now.

So after lunch, we went horseback riding. We went on a trail with my friends and the people I work for and used their horses. This is something I commonly do, I train all of their horses. He opted to take the half blind, more difficult horse. She has never been on a trail ride due to her blindness and we have been starting her slowly. Apparently he wanted the glory of completing the challenge. Everything was actually going alright on the ride and we even excused his apparent roughness on the horse. He then took her ahead of the group to get her focused and try to get her moving and working better.

On the way home he told me he got off the horse and kicked her repeatedly with his steel toe boots and clocked her in the head when she resisted. She wasn’t even misbehaving, she is simply out of shape and tired not to mention nervous from lack of sight.

I will hit a horse, and reprimand it but I will never in any way HURT a horse like this guy did.

I sat there in shock as he told me and had a silent ride back to my house. I quickly exited the car and called the farm to tell them the disturbing news and promptly bitched him out over the phone.

I guess I had the right idea for the past 8 months while I was single.

By the way he is 22, I am 20.
Oh, and let me add – I did let it go. After I bitched him out for a laying a hand like that on my animals. It was awful he told me everything ON the date. I’d never go out with someone like that if I knew the information about them previously.

If my feet hurt and get blisters from work, is there a way to prevent it in the future?

by admin

Although this isn’t about running, I believe it’s a relevant question to this forum because runners deal with blisters and hurt feet all the time.

Okay, I’m working with a temp job company right now and I’ve been assigned to manual labor for so many weeks. We’re required to use steel-toed boots at the job. After my first week, my feet hurt really bad on the soles and have blisters. I wonder if something contributing is my boot size is 1/2 size bigger than the size I use for all my shoes (perhaps sliding around)? If that’s the case, would putting those removable shoe paddings that you see at Walmart help with something like this or even make it move around less?

The reason why is I really don’t want to spend 0 on a new pair of steel-toed boots, especially since it’s a temp job. I also really don’t want to quit this job because I need the money.

What could I do about my feet?
